AUDITION FAQ
Check out some of our frequently asked questions below!
WHO CAN AUDITION?
All full-time undergraduate or graduate students who identify as female are able and welcome to audition!
HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU USUALLY TAKE?
It's impossible to determine an exact number of individuals we take, as it is entirely dependent on the amount of members that graduate or study abroad, as well as how many of each voice part we need. This number typically ranges between three and six, but is not definitive!
CAN I AUDITION FOR MORE THAN ONE GROUP?
Absolutely! Aside from Main Squeeze, there are five other a cappella groups within the A Cappella Council at Syracuse University:
The Mandarins, an all-female a cappella group;
Otto Tunes, an all-male a cappella group;
Orange Appeal, an all-male a cappella group;
Oy Cappella, a co-ed a cappella group;
and Groovestand, a co-ed a capella group.
While you are welcome to audition for any group for which you qualify, you cannot be in more than one group should you be accepted to multiple.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN AUDITIONS?
Everyone who auditions is looked at holistically. You don't need to be the world's greatest musician, as your voice is only one part of it! We look for people who are passionate about music, who love to entertain, and who are fun-loving and hardworking. The best thing you can do in your audition is to be confident and to be yourself!
WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT LIKE?
Main Squeeze rehearses every Monday and Wednesday from 9:00 PM - 11:00 PM, as well as one additional day a week to be decided every semester for sectionals. Typically during a major performance week, we will increase the amount of rehearsals to fit our members' schedules. Our fall semester performances include Empow(her), our fall invitational, Afterhours, and other small gigs. We also go on tour at the beginning of winter break, which is a great opportunity for us to travel together and bond. In the spring, our performances typically consist of Cozy Cappella, our spring invitational, Afterhours, and other small gigs throughout the semester. Many of our members are also involved in other on-campus organizations along with Main Squeeze, so it's very possible to find a balance!
